Pottery Wheel Techniques You Can Try

Pottery wheel centering clay

1. Centering Clay

Learn to center the clay so it spins smoothly and stays balanced. This is the foundation for every piece you make.

Opening clay on pottery wheel

2. Opening the Clay

Create an even opening in the center of your clay. This forms the base of your future vessel.

Pulling clay walls on pottery wheel

3. Pulling Walls

Gently lift and thin the clay to build the height of your piece. The goal is to keep the walls even.

Shaping bowls and cups on pottery wheel

4. Shaping Bowls and Cups

Refine the form by shaping the curves, contours, and rim. This is where your design becomes unique.

Trimming pottery foot

5. Trimming the Foot

After drying, trim the base to create a smooth foot. This helps your piece sit flat and feel professional.

Adding texture to pottery

6. Adding Texture and Finishing Details

Use tools and simple techniques to add texture, patterns, or decorative touches that make your piece one of a kind.
